Big Day Out (1994)

Concept and creative process

Opening titles for a series which journeyed round the UK searching out the people, myths, history, pastimes, music, food and drink that make it special. John Scott’s design for the logo for the programme took the form of a pastiche illustration in the style of British Rail travel posters of the 1930s. The sequence was made in post-production using production footage framed in a graphic railway destination board. The travel footage, shots of the presenters and the names of the planned destinations for the series wiped in and out inside the grid of the board, to the accompaniment of a specifically composed jaunty soundtrack extolling the pleasures that Morecombe had to offer.
