Between the Lines (1992)

Concept and creative process

This title sequence for Tony Garnett’s (Kes), World Productions, co-produced with the BBC, set the mood and scene for the detective drama series featuring actor Neil Pierson as Detective Superintendent Tony Clarke. The sequence featured a combination of show footage and specially shot 35mm film of the actor on a turntable with a rim lighting effect. The material was then edited and combined in Quantel Henry using hand painted invisible mattes to integrate the footage together in a seamless optical way. The letter box effect title typography was also created using Henry.
