Bedtime Stories - Hansel and Gretel (1974)

Concept and creative process

Retelling beloved fairy tales for an adult audience, this series brought old stories into the contemporary world, complete with a dark twist. For the titles Oliver Elmes created an animated caption that could be revolved single frame under the camera, firstly to reveal the series title and simultaneously to revolve from sun to moon, and then after the camera moved in, to revolve again from the moon to the illustration of the story about to be told - The Gingerbread House. He filmed this sequence for each episode adding a new final illustration each time.
