BBC Two Curve 'Wonder' ident (2018)

Concept and creative process

"The inspiration for the 'Wonder' ident came from the idea of juxtaposing the patterns of huge natural formations (like satellite images) with tiny mineral formations like geoids. Noticing that minerals like Jade and Agate have banded structures resembling layers of sediment in satellite imagery, but also a chaotic but beautiful interior of crystals, we created a split layout, with the "2" shape as the dividing line. In 3D software, a structure was made which cut into the screen on the left to show thousands of crystals, and plateaued on the right, to show a repeating sinusoidal pattern gently lapping away from the central line. The piece was created using Houdini as the 3D software, with compositing in Nuke."
