Ask The Family (1983)

Concept and creative process

'Ask The Family' was a quiz show contest of speed and wits between families from all over the UK. This was a long running strand which had already commanded a devoted following since its launch in 1967. This new sequence depicted a family, initially in silhouette form, which represented the contestants. Silhouetted figures of parents and two children in diamond shaped vignettes animate in and out of centre frame in a revolving action. Smaller versions of the same silhouettes slide in from top and bottom of frame to join rectangular silhouettes of each parent with one child, parents together and the whole family in discussion with one another. The foursome zooms to full screen and mixes from silhouette to a full colour illustration, set over the programme logo, which is finally seen complete when the vignette fades out.
