Course: BA (Hons) Motion Graphics
Year of Graduation: 2017
I wasn’t sure I even wanted to go to university because I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life. But then I found the Ravensbourne Foundation course and that offered a variety of learning - Graphic Design, Fashion, 3D Design, Photography and Animation. That really appealed to me because I wanted to try different things. It was through this that I found animation and absolutely fell in love with the work; I didn't question doing a degree in Motion Graphics after that. I was already comfortable at Ravensbourne, and the course allowed me to explore multiple paths rather than having to focus heavily on a very specific skill-set. It was just perfect.
One of the biggest highlights of my time at Ravensbourne was just getting to know the people there. From the lecturers to the students, it's such a great feeling to be surrounded by people who care about the field of work and are so supportive of each other, life-long friends and contacts have been made for sure. The other highlight was the success of my grad film which in a sense was a love letter about the journey I’d experienced to becoming a Motion Designer while at Ravensbourne.
The degree is so broad it allowed me to explore my own work and identity, which was incredibly important because I found the kind of work that I enjoyed making. We were taught industry standard software, so straight out of university I was comfortable diving straight into After Effects, Photoshop and Illustrator for a variety of jobs.
Ravensbourne has a fantastic network of contacts, with big names from industry coming in to talk to students, many offering internships and jobs. The Degree Show is an incredible moment to share your work with amazing people who already value Ravensbourne because they know how many students go on to do great things from here.
Straight out of university I began freelancing. I’d already started following specific studios that I wanted to be a part of, and I’d spent my time on the degree building up a portfolio of work that I was proud to share. One of my freelancing jobs took me to Dubai for 3 weeks, which was by far the greatest experience of my life. It came from a contact made at the Degree Show. Shortly after, I took an internship at my dream studio, Animade, and I’m now in a full-time position there!
