Ravensbourne University London Film students unite for intensive industry‑style production week
Students from Ravensbourne University London’s BA (Hons) Digital Film Production course recently took part in an intensive week-long production initiative designed to strengthen collaboration across key filmmaking disciplines and prepare them for industry-style production environments.
The Collaboration Shooting Week, which ran from 13-19 April, brought together Level 5 students to produce scenes from original screenplays they had created and developed earlier in the semester as part of the Collaboration module.
Designed to prepare students for their Final Major Projects (FMP) and future careers within the screen industries, the initiative encouraged learners to work in cross-disciplinary teams spanning directing, producing, writing, production design, cinematography and other core production roles.
John quote
This was an ambitious and intensive process that required everybody to work very closely and in a very focused way. I’m delighted to say that overall and, largely due to student commitment and hard work, it worked out very well, as the end results demonstrate.”
Across five days of production, students worked on 10 separate film projects, with two shoots taking place each day. Each production team was provided with equal access to professional-standard resources, including adaptable studio sets, standardised lighting, camera and sound kits, as well as professional actors.
Students were also supported by former Ravensbourne student and professional 1st Assistant Director Otto Shed, who was brought in to oversee productions and help ensure shoots ran effectively and on schedule.
Alongside the productions themselves, students also captured behind-the-scenes content documenting the process and production experience throughout the week.
The initiative forms part of Ravensbourne’s wider commitment to learning with industry, helping students gain experience of the collaborative workflows and pressures commonly found within professional film and television production environments.
Edward quote
Getting students to work together across disciplines can be challenging and should not really be something they get their first taste of in FMP. Hopefully, this group of students will be able to use this experience to enhance their FMP experience and also prepare them more effectively for work in industry.”
It is hoped the Collaboration Shooting Week will now become an embedded part of the module moving forward, allowing future cohorts of students to continue benefiting from the experience and industry-focused approach to collaborative filmmaking.
