Concept and creative process
Opening titles for a long-running series featuring the life and work of policemen stationed at Newtown. The ‘Z Cars’ logo, revived from a 1969 incarnation, plays a strong graphic role in this sequence. Firstly, it was filmed top-lit as an outline ‘Z’ becoming a solid revolving ‘Z’ in the build-up to the main title, and then as an animated matte which framed a montage of live action police footage within the shape of the letterform. The separate elements were combined in a film optical in the lab.
