You Must be the Husband (1987)

Concept and creative process

This sitcom series ‘You Must Be the Husband’ told the story of a successful female best-selling authoress and her husband. The idea for the titles was inspired by the use of the keyboard and the shift mechanism and the sounds of a manual typewriter. Stills of the writer at work and the main actors were panned off or on optically by the clever use of mattes, synchronised to the rhythm and sound of the keys being pressed. The white superimposed titles were similarly panned on and off in sync to the sounds and shift actions or were typed on one letter at a time. The typeface selected for the titles was American Typewriter.
