Wogan's Christmas Box (1985)

Concept and creative process

Titles for a programme in which Terry Wogan previewed the Christmas programmes on BBC One and chatted to Paul Daniels, Judi Dench and Les Dawson. Aled Jones sang a medley of carols. The title sequence was shot as cel animation on 2s (i.e. each frame shot twice) by Bert Walker on his rostrum camera at Zephyr Films. The presents and boxes were created as paper cut-outs with airbrushed paper spheres and applied to animation cells. The final logo background was an airbrushed illustration. The highlights and sparkle were superimposed on a separate pass from backlit Kodaliths (clear on black negatives), so that the whole sequence was captured in-camera.
