Wild Bunch (1991)

Concept and creative process

Opening title sequence for ‘Wild Bunch’, a children's wildlife programme which discovered wild facts about animals. The animated animals, sound effects and music track worked very well together in this vibrant coloured sequence. The artwork was cut out and composited in a digital edit on various layers. The animating vignette frame was the one consistent feature, constantly cycling between several almost identical positions to keep the texture and colour in motion. The central space within the vignette became the main performance area for the cut-out animals to parade, whereas others appeared in a layer above the vignette frame. Finally, the ‘Wild Bunch’ logo was wiped in by the tail of the lemur. It was a very economical use of a minimal amount of animation required to create the illusion, and the repetition of the same cycle of artwork, in the case of the birds, flamingos, elephant etc., gave the effect of a much more densely animated sequence than was actually the case.
