Whacko! (1971)

Concept and creative process

Titles for a weekly school sitcom starring Jimmy Edwards as headmaster of a boys’ school. His instantly recognisable high-domed forehead and bushy handlebar moustache made Jimmy Edwards eminently suitable for caricature. Animation was therefore the obvious choice for the titles of ‘Whacko!’, which were prepared as cel-painted artwork and filmed on a rostrum camera over a drawn blackboard background, on which the titles had been chalked.
