Weird Nature (2002)

Concept and creative process

Titles for ‘Weird Nature’, a series exploring the natural world at its strangest. The sequence was a response to the premise of the series that the truth about Nature can be stranger than fiction or myth. It depicted unicorns and mermaids among gigantic breaking waves with giant flying Manta rays. The Guinness 1999 commercial ‘Surfer’, directed by Jonathan Glazer, featured ground-breaking visual effects by Framestore, inspired by Walter Crane’s painting ‘Neptune’s Horses’. This sequence must have inspired the ambition for the titles of ‘Weird Nature’, which were created from specially shot and archive footage in a digital edit.
