Week In Week Out (1971)

Concept and creative process

Opening titles for a Welsh investigative current affairs series ‘Week In Week Out’, looking at people, places and events in Wales and beyond. The sequence was filmed on a rostrum camera and consisted of two high-contrast negative and positive Kodaliths of the presenter’s face. These were used as masks over coloured typographic backgrounds composed of the words ‘Week in Week out’ and ‘Kane Reports’. The texts were printed in two different colours in rows filling the screen and were panned horizontally under the rostrum camera in opposite directions. The camera cut out from close-up to wide shot in four stages, both on the negative photographic image and the typographic background simultaneously. The same movement was repeated in reverse using the positive image and background, ending on a close-up of Kane’s eye and ‘Kane Reports’.
