Watch Out Monthly (1998)

Concept and creative process

Titles for ‘Watch Out Monthly’, a natural history programme presented by Chris Packham and Nick Baker, which looked at what was currently going on in the world of wildlife and encouraged viewers to contribute their own sightings. The title sequence was an intriguing concept, taking the viewer on a journey from the urban to the rural in one continuous spiralling movement. The motion was an invitation to ever closer inspection of the natural world, with the frames through which the views were seen becoming simpler and more rustic with each transition, until the view became completely open and the frame was replaced by a swirling vortex of leaves and flowers. The animated title logo which followed was replaced for each month of the series. The original shots and camera zooms were digitally manipulated in post-production with layers of leaves additionally composited over each scene. The specially composed ‘Watch Out’ soundtrack added the final polish to the sequence.
