The War in Korea (1988)

Concept and creative process

Title sequence for the documentary series 'The War in Korea', written and narrated by the journalist Max Hastings, who recounts the Korean War (1950-1953) with the help of archive footage and eye-witness testimonies from soldiers on both sides of the conflict. The brief was to create a sequence which would link to the maps, which were to play a major role within the programme itself. Artwork was made of the Korean and USA flag motifs. The artwork was filmed on a 35mm film rostrum camera using a ripple glass to create a stylised flag waving effect. The sequence starts with a splat of red to create the background colour of the Korean flag. This was done by dropping paint bit by bit under the rostrum camera. Animated cels were created for the transitions, such as enlarging the stars until they bled into the white background. The UN motif and world globe were created in CGI.
