W. Somerset Maugham - Victims of Fate (1970)

Concept and creative process

A visually intriguing title sequence for a series of plays 'Victims of Fate', based on W. Somerset Maugham's numerous stories about women. The famous Graham Sutherland portrait of W. Somerset Maugham was used as the basis for a rostrum camera shoot of a tunnel of picture frames. The camera tracks slowly in on the portrait, filling each consecutive frame as it does so, until it ends on a close-up of the writer's face and dissolves through to the episode title.
