Vox Pop (1983)

Concept and creative process

Opening titles for a weekly documentary serial concerning the private lives and public thoughts of some of the people of Darwen, Lancashire. The titles were filmed on a rostrum camera using artwork of a wall painting matched in perspective and texture to the end of a semi-detached house in the town. Artwork of the stained-glass window through which the the final shot was viewed, and which formed the background for the ‘Vox Pop’ logo, was also filmed on a rostrum camera.  The matte for this and for the opening wipe-on of the close-up of the illustration were likewise shot on the rostrum and the whole sequence was composited together as a film optical in the lab.
