Concept and creative process
Film-makers from around the country were armed with camcorders and set loose on their fellow citizens. Their compelling and entertaining stories add up to an exploration of what drives and divides the people of the UK. For the titles, scissors were filmed in close-up cutting folded paper to make what is revealed to be a chain of cut-out paper figures. The paper chain folds closed and when it opens again, the figures have been replaced by the letters UNITED, becoming a background to the animation of the other half of the programme title ‘United Kingdom’. The sequence was edited and layered on a Quantel Henry at 4:2:2.
