Spywatch - Mrs Misery programme sequence (1996)

Concept and creative process

'Spywatch' was a short series within the BBC Schools ‘Look and Read’ strand for 7-9 year olds on ‘Daytime on Two’. It was set during the Second World War and featured the lives and adventures of children evacuated from the cities to the country. In this programme excerpt, the anomalies of English spelling are highlighted through live action, type overlays and Mrs Misery’s song, which was shot against blue screen. This technique enabled the actors to be recorded separately and recombined in the edit with one another and in a drawn, or partly real set.
