Smiley's People (1982)

Concept and creative process

John Le Carré's classic spy drama serial is symbolised by the leitmotif of the chalk line on the park bench, an example of widely used signals under the 'Moscow Rules' espionage operational procedure, creating an enigmatic mood of suspense and ultimately destruction. The sequence was filmed live action with close-up shots of textures, combined with single frame animation of the chalk line, and subtle lighting changes, camera control and finally pyrotechnics.
