Six Fifty-Five Special (1982)

Concept and creative process

Titles for a series of live summer entertainment including interviews, music and guests. A light scan technique was used to wipe on the ‘6.55’ logo at the beginning of the title sequence and the portraits of presenters Sally James and David Soul, which enlivened the otherwise static frames. This treatment connected visually to the treatment of the following scene, which was a series of still cut-out illustrations of musical instruments, discs, a TV, the theatre etc., set against a black background made up of 6s and 5s, in which white outlines of the musical instruments were superimposed and animated on the rostrum camera by means of a camera move and a neon effect. The programme logo animation was reprised as a finale.
