Sister Wendy's Grand Tour (1994)

Concept and creative process

Sister Wendy Beckett, hermit and art aficionado, shared her views on art as she travelled to various places. This title sequence showed her leaving for her own version of the Grand Tour. The sequence was shot at the then fairly new Stansted Airport, with its statuesque architecture almost symbolising that of a church, thereby contributing much to the idea. This idea of the airport as a cathedral was emphasised in the style of shooting. The shoot took a full day to complete, as each shot needed composing in quite a stylised way. A crane was used for the initial high shot and a long lens was used on many other shots to emphasise the idea of Sister Wendy almost floating through a serene space. The sequence was shot working with a BBC programme cameraman.
