Sherlock Holmes (1965)

Concept and creative process

Opening titles for a series of Sherlock Holmes adaptations, based on the stories of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The titles were filmed on a rostrum camera, panning back and forth between the two frames, which contained photographic prints of London’s horse-drawn traffic and the ‘Bobbies’ on the beat. The prints of Douglas Wilmer as Sherlock Holmes and Nigel Stock as Dr. Watson were also used to introduce the characters. The hand drawn white credit title captions were double exposed over the framed prints in-camera on a separate run.
