Sense And Sensibility (1981)

Concept and creative process

Opening titles for an adaptation by Alexander Baron of Jane Austen's classic novel ‘Sense and Sensibility’, which portrayed the life and loves of the Dashwood sisters, Elinor and Marianne. The title sequence introduced the sisters in the garden sitting on either end of a seesaw, framed by a soft oval vignette. The titles were overlaid with colour printed cel artwork on the white background beneath the vignette and filmed on a rostrum camera, together with a soft vignette matte. The two shots were composited by means of the matte in a film optical.
