Screaming (1992)

Concept and creative process

Titles for a sitcom series about three women sharing a house who have one thing in common - his name is Ralph. The title sequence was a successful marriage of live action and animated effects. The main characters were filmed in a studio against black and rotoscoped ie traced as a guide for the animation, which was prepared as artwork using coloured chalks on black paper. In the digital edit the figures were cut out and combined with layers of the swirling animating effects at different densities to create the sense of the bond between all of the four characters in the story. The programme title ‘Screaming’ was also digitally manipulated and keyed over background artwork of the moon in a starry sky with animated layers of mist.
