Satellite City (1996)

Concept and creative process

Opening titles for a comedy series set in an imaginary small town in the valleys of south Wales, written by Jane and Boyd Clack. The show’s title ‘Satellite City’ refers to the testing of satellite dishes in the area to improve television reception. The animated titles reference this fact and introduce the main characters and the house they all share. The limited animation itself was created in a digital edit from cut-out colourised video images of the characters, specially shot to introduce the storyline of the chance encounter with an American who becomes their lodger. The characters are set on a revolving world in space made up of newsprint and surrounded by all kinds of flying objects, including satellite dishes and TV sets.
