Pride and Prejudice (1995)

Concept and creative process

The brief was to create a sequence which, although for a period drama, had a more refreshing and modern mood, as it was thought that the storyline had a current appeal and reflected a universal story.

I was asked to create a sequence which avoided a classic period drama approach and to avoid clichéd type styles of the time. The concept revolves around the simple use of fabrics to represent the sisters – these could be their dress fabrics. The idea was to film white textured fabric representing the innocent young ladies as backgrounds for the credits and main title caption.

The fabrics were shot on a 35mm film motion control rig, which allowed the lighting to be manipulated within each film segment. This method added interest and movement to a very simple idea. The fabrics were shot in extreme close-ups, so a specialist lighting director was employed. The typography was added in the edit in a Quantel Henry suite.
