Politics Now (1977)

Concept and creative process

‘Politics Now' was a series of programmes looking at background issues in British politics. The idea for the titles was to depict the changing face of politics literally by showing the changing faces of recent politicians from the different political parties. Their faces appear as reflections on a black 78 record, which is playing the audio of the sequence. The name of the programme itself is on the central label of the record. The sequence was shot on 35mm film in real-time on a turntable. The white illustrations were created in an etching style and were double-exposed onto the black record in-camera to look like reflections on the black glossy surface.
