The Pickwick Papers (1985)

Concept and creative process

Titles for a classic drama serial, adapted from the Dickens novel. Mr Pickwick, Tupman, Winkle, Snodgrass and Sam Weller begin their travels through the England of stage-coaches and coaching inns. A special gold foil-blocked edition of ‘Pickwick Papers’ was filmed for the title sequence lying on a writing desk with quill pens and a pot of ink.  As the camera moved into a close-up, the cover opened to reveal the first illustrated page and writer’s credit. The page turn to the episode number was done separately on a rostrum camera and the drawn scene was accurately lined up with the frame of the film opening scene to which it was dissolving, thereby creating a seamless transition. The filming of this final scene of the titles was repeated for each episode and edited onto the new opening scene each time.
