Oxford Road Show (1984)

Concept and creative process

Titles for ‘The Oxford Road Show’, a live magazine programme with the latest pop sounds and reports on issues in the news. The title sequence took viewers and the Oxford Road Studio building on a space trip ending up back in Manchester in time for the ‘ORS’ to begin. The artwork was computer-generated from scanned drawings of the building, manipulated by the software and printed out as an animation sequence on acetates. These were converted into clear on black negative images and filmed backlit with green gels on the rostrum camera. The artwork for the 3D ‘ORS’ logo and the Earth was created in the same way and all three elements were superimposed over a moving starfield. A 2D coloured animation cycle of the ‘ORS’ logo was animated and layered at an angle behind a vignette containing pictures detailing the menu for the upcoming show.
