Only Fools and Horses (1981)

Concept and creative process

This classic John Sullivan sitcom set in south London, centred on hapless market trader Del Boy, his brother Rodney, the rest of the Trotter clan and a host of Peckham characters. The brief for the titles from the Producer Ray Butt was to introduce the main characters, who as market traders bought and sold almost anything including dodgy goods with a belief that they could get rich doing so. The title sequence was composed of still photographs of the Trotters, some shot with a motorised camera, plus Peckham market and its environs and the Totter Reliant Robin three-wheeler van, parked on the estate where they lived. The photographs of the cast and the credits labels were filmed on a rostrum camera, with the labels animated on and off during the filming of the stills. The show logo stood the test of time and was used to promote the West End theatre adaptation of the show when it opened at the Theatre Royal Haymarket in February 2019, before sadly falling victim to the Covid 19 lock-down restrictions.
