Music In Camera (1988)

Concept and creative process

Opening titles for a BBC Scotland series providing a platform for twenty four recitals. The title sequence was created as a series of still-life tableaux made up of 2D cut-out figures of musicians taking part in music recitals in a variety of room settings. The computer-controlled camera explored each of the tableaux in turn at a constant speed, making good use of the parallax effect as it passed between the separate groups of figures in each one. For the final scene, the set consisted of three-dimensional physical models, with the camera pulling back from a silhouetted figure sitting in a window, past a gramophone, a music stand, a cello and a violin lying on their backs to alight on the three-dimensional programme logo in a pool of light on the floor.
