Mosaic (1989)

Concept and creative process

The titles for ‘Mosaic’, a series of films about equal opportunities in a multicultural Britain, were created in 3D computer animation. From all sides of the screen, thin coloured tubular shapes animate on, creating a snaking pattern of interwoven colours. The action then goes into reverse, with different sections of the pattern fading out as they animate off. Finally, only the title of the programme remains centre screen, constructed from a composite of all of the coloured shapes. It is softly vignetted on a neutral grey background, which is now revealed to be etched with the pattern of the path traced by the animation.
