Marlene Marlowe Investigates (1993)

Concept and creative process

Titles for a live-action cartoon about the adventures of a private investigator and her aunt. The opening sequence really set the scene and the tone of the programme to follow. The actors were shot against a blue screen in a studio in a stylised sleuth detective parody and were keyed in post-production over Pete Wane’s drawings by Malcolm Dalton in the BBC Quantel Harry suite. The torch beam was achieved with a black and white matte, coloured in post-production, with a simple animated cat keyed in in post-production. The live shadow silhouettes in the torch beam were derived from blue screen shots too, softened, silhouetted and combined with the animated torch beam and artwork wall background. The title artwork by Ted Cload was illuminated also in the same manner.
