Madhur Jaffrey's Indian Cookery (1982)

Concept and creative process

The actress and international cookery expert Madhur Jaffrey introduced programmes which showed lovers of Indian food how to achieve those subtle and exotic flavours in their own kitchens. A sequence of Indian spices and typical ingredients was pre-filmed dissolving from one to the next. On an aerial image film rostrum this film was then projected frame by frame through a large kaleidoscope rotating on the animation table, directly into the camera lens to record the patterns created in the rotating mirrors by the original film. The title was superimposed in a final pass from a white on black caption, burnt in on the composite negative.
