The Lost Tribe (1980)

Concept and creative process

Titles for ‘The Lost Tribe’, a six-part drama serial by Jack Ronder about a family of Lithuanian Jews who settled in Scotland. The lighting of a special, nine-branched candelabrum, a Hanukkiah, is the main Jewish Hanukkah ritual. The candles represent the eight nights of Hanukkah with an extra one positioned slightly higher, from which the others are lit. This powerful image steeped in Jewish ritual seemed appropriate as a background to the titles of this drama, which was a BBC Scotland production.
