Long, Short and Tall Stories (1980)

Concept and creative process

Titles for a six part series of an adult's guide to children's books. The programme covered subjects from recent fiction to picture books and early teenage novels. A series of eight illustrations were created. Four illustrations were part of the four words in the name of the programme and the other four appeared in between each word. The illustrations were made like a pop up book with at least three layers on a flat plane. These illustrations were placed on a specially created model mover in the form of a metal 3 dimentional rotating device. The ratchet system attached enabled single frame shooting. Each illustration was 12 x 9 inches in size in order to fit the screen ratio at the time. It was important when lighting this model to ensure that the blacks were as black as possible so as not to see the mechanism, whilst making the illustrations as bright and rich in colour as possible. The end shot was achieved by physically opening the image of the book in single frame to reveal the start of the programme.
