Life as We Know It (2001)

Concept and creative process

Titles for a ‘Life As We Know It‘, which was a comedy series about a husband and wife duo and their family life. The brief was to find a way to include some of the footage specially shot by the production team within the title sequence. The footage was not of particularly good quality (technically or in terms of interest) and could not therefore be used full screen as a main feature on its own. The producer also wanted to include some clips from the show within the title sequence. A graphic device was needed to tie these two elements together and to give a style and some meaning to the sequence. The dog was used to add interest and be the common thread. It was shot in a studio against blue screen with a few blue screen boxes. Various pre-visualised tasks were drawn up, such as getting the dog to move his head in order to make it look as if he was bringing on the title. The sequence was put together in a digital edit suite once the main artwork of the backround grid was created. This was because the majority of the sequence was made up of live action, therefore a real time system was more appropriate.
