King of the Ghetto (1986)

Concept and creative process

Opening titles for a drama centred on the racial tensions and politics of the Bengali community in and around Brick Lane, in the East End of London in the 1980s. The titles were  filmed live action on 35mm in a studio model shoot. The backgrounds were decaying, flaking  paint surfaces, barbed wire and broken glass indicative of the ghetto-like conditions  prevailing at the time in that area of London. The paint scraping action was filmed with a  35mm high speed camera without the benefit of a video playback. Designer Barbra Flinder  painted and distressed the door for the titles, which was also used as a background for the end credits.

Music written and performed by Dave Kelly and the Blues Band with Paul Jones on  harmonica.
