Jigsaw (1983)

Concept and creative process

Opening titles for a children's programme that combined elements of puzzle solving and entertainment. For the titles the jigsaw pieces were hand animated stop frame under a rostrum camera to create the background for the programme title. The individual letters were spelled out and then used to introduce a guessing game of live action scenes beginning with each letter. The original accompanying mime of the letter by presenter Adrian Hedley had by that time been dropped. Finally, the jigsaw background was removed in blocks by hand animation to reveal a picture of a street scene outside a post office underneath, which in turn was swiftly animated off to reveal the live studio and presenters.
