Jane Eyre (1983)

Concept and creative process

Titles for a dramatisation of Charlotte Bronte's classic tale of the shy orphan who falls in love with her rich and arrogant employer. It is one of the screen's most popular love stories.

The title sequence was filmed live action in a studio with the camera panning over a tabletop set dressed with all manner of contemporary artefacts. It finally alights on a drawing of Zelah Clarke as Jane, next to that of Timothy Dalton as Rochester her employer, to create a background for the main titles.
