It'll Never Work (1996)

Concept and creative process

Opening titles for a children's science and technology programme with ideas and inventions not to be found elsewhere. ‘It’ll Never Work’ was an attempt to get children interested in applied science. The programme was made on location at a Victorian pumping station. Links were filmed to join together films shot on location in the UK and USA. The science was presented as entertainment using a number of different presenters. It had a homemade aesthetic to encourage viewers to make things for themselves.
For the title sequence a simple animation of a panning background was made from archive video of a steam pump engine from the location. The insert video menu of upcoming features in the week’s episode needed to be updated easily in a VT edit on a weekly basis. The ball bearings and gyroscope were shot live on a video rostrum over green screen. The logo animation was created and all of the elements were composited together on a Quantel Hal.
