Inside the Press (1975)

Concept and creative process

'Inside the Press' was a series of five programmes on the national newspaper industry. This was pre-computer animation in a pre-digital era, so a physical process was needed to create the required effect of a very stylised printing press for the title sequence. Two roller captions were created in white and red on a black background using a hot press printing process. A specially designed roller caption machine was made by a Model maker to enable single frame shooting on a 16mm rostrum camera. One of the most difficult aspects of the job was to keep the whites and the contrast of the colours to give the most graphic, clean look possible.
