Inside Japan (1980)

Concept and creative process

Title sequence for a series of films which look at life in Kurotsuchi village, Kyushu, Japan through the eyes of members of two families: Kawaguchi and Shibata. The series attempted to get beneath the surface of Japanese life by letting the people speak for themselves, hence the images on the fan are of people, selected from various sources to contrast the traditional with the modern. The traditional Japanese paper folding fan used as a projection screen for the images was a model, specially constructed to slot into a spindle on a mechanised turntable with the spindle blacked out. The images were projected onto the revolving fan from 35mm colour transparencies, creating interesting changes of perspective. The whole sequence was filmed in 35mm single frame animation in one take, except for the main title lettering which was added optically.
