Illusionists (1976)

Concept and creative process

A series of programmes which looked at the world of illusion and introduced some of its practitioners. The designer’s aim in the titles was to employ a decorative illustrative approach to evoke the spirit of magic as theatrical performance. Animation is the perfect medium to demonstrate illusion, being one itself, with the potential to make the impossible happen before our very eyes. Ray Ogden seized on this possibility and animated a flowing sequence of pure illusion, painted on cel and filmed under the rostrum camera.
