Going Straight (1978)

Concept and creative process

Titles for a sitcom sequel to 'Porridge', starring Ronnie Barker. His character Fletch is finally released from Slade Prison in a nice sequence of unlocking prison doors with a few simple superimposed titles. This was really entirely the work of the production and was used on the front of each episode. The titles would have been provided by whichever designer was tasked with servicing the graphic requirements of the programme. These might include end credits on a roller caption superimposed from a studio camera, or telejector slides, 35mm black and white slides, played in on cue from the production gallery. The arrival of electronic character generators changed all that, and while the designer might choose the font, colour and layout, the generating of the names on the screen was the operator’s job, sitting alongside the vision mixer in the studio production gallery.
