Get Your Own Back (1994)

Concept and creative process

‘Get Your Own Back’ was a hugely popular long-running children’s programme that endured for 14 series from 1991 until 2004. The premise of the children's gameshow was to create an opportunity for a child to "get their own back" on an adult, who in their eyes had committed some crime (always trivial) for which they sought revenge. The end result for the adult was inevitably a dunk in a gunk tank. The theme for the studio was once again set in a funfair. Andy Carroll reflected this in his titles. He designed a logo together with a calligrapher based on the beautiful flowing letterforms of fairground artist Fred Fowle. He visited Fred’s studio in Wimbledon and was shown some of Foyle’s superb sketches. The live action was shot at Carter’s Steam Fair on Blackheath in South East London, with all the fun of the fair, intercut with close ups of sections of the ‘Get Your Own Back’ logo. He edited the film and composited the title logo with Des Puddifoot at Soho 601.
