Gallowglass (1993)

Concept and creative process

These titles were created for the 3-part drama serial ‘Gallowglass’, adapted from Ruth Rendell’s psychological thriller novel of the same name. Working with the sculptor on the production, a large statue of a lion and cherub-like character were commissioned for the titles and were also featured in the serial. These statues were filmed using a motion control camera at Terry Gilliam’s company, Peerless in Covent Garden. The lighting effect was achieved using mirror pieces placed in shallow water tanks, and then lit and reflected onto the subject to achieve an in-camera gobo effect. The actors' faces along with the rippling animating typography were then digitally composited onto the surface of the statues using Quantel Henry.
