The Film Review (2013)

Concept and creative process

Titles from a BBC News Channel programme presented by Mark Kermode who gives his unique take on the best and worst of the week's film and DVD releases. Designer Pete Everest explains more: "The Film Review was moving to a new, big studio and needed to be updated and brought more in line with the BBC News branding. As well as a short title sequence, there needed to be additional animations to use as 'stings' into film clips, and animations and artwork to populate and utilise the numerous screens in the studio. Because of the programme's Arts subject matter rather than a harder news agenda, it was agreed that the design could be more bespoke and less rigid when working with the BBC brand. It was decided that the design of the titles could spill over into the overall look of the programme - through to the set, screens and lighting. The format needed to feel more cinematic to reflect Mark Kermode's personal and passionate approach to reviews, but at the same time reflect a certain seriousness about the subject matter - a kind of balance between formal and informal. This is reflected in the 'organic' feel to the titles - using traditional film strips with the 'countdown' and 'sync' markers as elements but manipulated and distorted using digital graphics techniques and software. And the music too, was specifically commissioned to incorporate the BBC's core brand sound, but also have an energy and personality of its own. The set lighting, screen graphics and overall design reflect the same idea - using traditional images to show a cinema auditorium and use low, more 'moody' lighting both in colour and strength, to try and give the feel of a more traditional film environment but presented from a large, modern studio environment."
